The energy generation and distribution of the future demands not only decentralized, flexible solutions, but also the networking of producers, converters, storage facilities, distributors and consumers.

Research performs a crucial innovative role in this regard, with intelligent communication and control systems required in order to ensure that both the proportion of the energy market taken up by renewable energies and energy efficiency are maximized. In particular, the development of innovative, cross-system approaches and process analyses which yield future-proof, (resource-) efficient solutions is a prerequisite for not only the increasing combination of electrical and thermal networks and storage options, but also the implementation of flexibilization options at consumers. Advances in this area are also dependent on the identification of barriers to implementation and the design of appropriate countermeasures. This must include consideration of consumer behaviour.

Simulation, automation and optimization tools are developed alongside feasible business models for modern energy systems. The tools and models are then tested using a variety of real-world case studies. Application-oriented research based on real-world case studies is expected to accelerate the commercialization of the technologies and innovations in question.
